I AM TIRED OF THE USE OF THE WORD HERO!

Every day I hear the misuse of the word hero. I hear the media talking about a celebrity or an athlete being a hero. I hear about reformed alcoholics or drug abusers being called heroes because they are now clean and sober. I hear about a celebrity being a hero for standing up for an injustice somewhere in the world. None of these circumstances or actions makes one a hero.

A hero is not someone who decided to start using drugs, got addicted and then got clean. This is a flawed human being that got tired of the impact their poor decisions made on their life and change it. A hero is not someone who can run a football down the field, shoot a basketball into a hoop or hit a home run. A hero is not even an amazing doctor who performs life-saving surgeries (unless done in the battlefield).

A hero is someone who puts themselves in harm’s way to serve or protect another human being. A hero is the man or woman who puts on a law enforcement uniform every day and puts their lives on the line to protect their fellow citizens and officers. A hero is a man or woman who puts on fire fighter gear and runs into a burning building to save others. A hero is the man or woman who puts on their military uniform and goes into harm’s way to protect this country and its citizens from those around the world that would like to see us dead. A hero can even be a mom or dad who puts there life on the line for their child or another person.

There is a difference between a good example, a person who dedicates themselves to excellence in the service of others and a true hero. Please think of this the next time you throw around the word hero. By cheapening the word you cheapen the sacrifices made by a true HERO.

The Idiots Guide to Law Enforcement Use of Force

There has been a lot of misinformation floating around regarding the use of TASER devices and most recently pepper spray (OC or Oleoresin Capsicum). From the “don’t tase me bro” incident at the University of Florida in 2007 to the most recent use of pepper spray at the University of California, Davis protest in November, the general public has received a lot of misinformation about police tactics and the use of force.

Let us start with a basic overview of the general use of force progression in use in most police agencies around the country today. In general, the use of force policy spells out the steps in the use of force and defines a hierarchy of use, without requiring that every step be used. The use of force policy in its generic form looks something like this;

1.         Verbal commands (constructive authority)
2.         Physical manipulation (physical contact and physical force)
3.         Chemical or electronic weapons (mechanical force)
4.         Impact weapons (mechanical force)
5.         Deadly force

It is not required that an officer go through each step and may escalate over steps as the situation warrants. For example, if a suspect is charging at the officer or another person with a knife, it is not necessary that the officer use physical or electronic force stop them. In this case the immediate use of deadly force may be justified.

It is easy to Monday morning quarterback a police officer’s use of force, but unless all aspects of the situation are analyzed, it is impossible for those that were not involved to make a judgment based on limited information.

In today’s society many believe that what they see on video tells the whole story and most times it does not. Rarely are video cameras rolling at the beginning of an incident and generally pick up after an incident has escalated. What do you see on the news or on YouTube? Generally, the last few, escalated, moments of a situation that has much more to the story. Take a look at the UC Davis incident for example, did you see video on the news that showed the protestors blocking officers from leaving, protestors being verbally aggressive and being told numerous times to clear the path or they would be subject to pepper spray? No. What was portrayed were “peaceful” protestors being “attacked” by out of control cops, which in the end was simply not true.

It is important that the public realize that there is a lot of training that is put into the use of force and the facts that lead up to the use of force are not always as clear as the video tape they may be viewing. In the vast majority of use of force cases the officers were not only clearly justified, but many times had exercised extreme restraint in attempting to resolve the situation prior to it escalating to the point that citizens thought they could make a buck by videotaping the aftermath.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM A BACKGROUND BRIEFING WITH SENIOR US INTELLIGENCE AND DEFENSE OFFICIALS ON THE DEATH OF OSAMA bin LADEN

At 1:10 a.m. Monday preparations were made for OBL's religious rites to be given onboard the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier in the North Arabian Sea. In accordance with Islamic practice he was washed and wrapped in a white sheet before being buried at sea at 2am Eastern.

His body was placed on board a prepared flat board and then "eased into the sea" at 2 am.

During the firefight "he did resist" he was found with one of his wives. The Bin Laden family occupied the second and third floor of the main house in the compound. Bin Laden was killed at the end of the 40 minute raid.

He was described as "living rather comfortably" in the compound.

A "volume of materials were taken from the compound and will be 'exploited

No detainees were taken onboard the helicopter that took Bin Laden's body from the compound. No detainees taken at all.

The Blackhawk helicopter went down at the beginning of the operation.

OBL was not the male combatant who used the female human shield - the individual (either his son or two of the brother couriers held the woman and fired from behind her). Defense officials said in general all of the males used women at the compound in general as human shields. One woman used as a human shield was killed.

Signed order from the President was to "kill or capture" Bin Laden. Bin Laden resisted by US officials would not say how.

No land alternative for burial - in other words "There was no country willing to take him."

The compound was 1 acre in size.

35 mile NE of Islamabad.

Opaque windows to the street.

There were 4 military age males (including Bin Laden and his son) and one woman killed during raid.

Intelligence official on Pak/ US cooperation:

"The intelligence on this compound was shared with no one outside of the U.S. government and in fact only a small group of people inside the US government were aware. The Pakistanis did not know of our interest in the compound, but they did provide us information that helped us develop a clear focus on the compound over time."

The defense official added, "It was a unilateral operation."

OBL was verbally identified, by name, on the scene by one of his wives.

They also compared photos of him on the scene and they had 95 percent certainty it was him.

There was also DNA analysis completed this morning and they have a virtual 100 percent match based on comparisons to the DNA of family members.

Because we are AMERICA and we have the best fighting men and women of any military in the world. Because of those who serve, we have had no successful attacks on our homeland in ten years!

THERE IS NO ANSWER GOOD ENOUGH

It shouldn’t amaze me, but it does, that pundits and politicians will take any tragedy and try to turn it into an opportunity to bang their political drums. The tragedy in Tucson is no exception. It started with the Pima County Sheriff, Clarence Dupnik, when he took it upon himself to make baseless innuendos and comments during a press conference that placed the blame of this act of violence on the shoulders of “those who spew vitriol” and in a roundabout way blamed it on the citizens of the state of Arizona because, in his words, “we have become the capitol, the mecca for prejudice and bigotry”. The word exploitation comes to mind when reliving his press conference. The only thing that Sheriff Dupnik has proven in his baseless comments is that it is time for him to retire and be thanked for his 50 years of law enforcement service.

Everyone wants a reason why these things happen. The fact is that there is no good reason why these things happen. Some killers use their right wing beliefs, some killers use their left wing beliefs and most use some convoluted reasoning in their own mind as to why they commit these horrific crimes. As soon as I read the ramblings of the killer, Jared Lee Loughner, on his Facebook and YouTube postings, I quickly made my unscientific diagnosis that he was probably schizophrenic. Schizophrenics commonly think in a circular or spherical motion that only makes sense to them. It is not uncommon for schizophrenia to not become apparent until the person is in their 20’s. Nothing about the killer’s actions or words indicate that his motivations had anything to do with right wing talk show hosts or politicians. Even though left leaning politicians and media pundits would like you to believe that this horrible, criminal, act was motivated by right wing hate, there is no evidence or proof that this is the case. As a matter of fact, the killer listed Marx as some of his reading and a friend has indicated that he was actually quite liberal and his beliefs were quite left leaning.

The bottom line is that we will never have a sufficient answer as to why these innocent people were killed and wounded. No matter the killer’s reason, it will never be good enough. Now we need to focus on healing and honoring the dead and the heroes of the moment.

RIP Deputy Suzanne Hopper & Officer Jillian Smith

We have had 15 law enforcement officers killed since the first of December. None more covered than the killing of Ohio Deputy Suzanne Hopper and Arlington, Texas, Officer Jillian Smith, who gave her life protecting an 11 year old girl from a gunman. Both American heroes in their own right. God bless and comfort those who were left behind.

HONORING ANOTHER AMERICAN HERO

Private First Class Austin Staggs of Weatherford, TX was killed on November 29, in the Nangarhar province, Afghanistan, along with 5 of his battle mates. Pfc. Staggs died of wounds suffered when an insurgent attacked their unit with small arms fire. Also killed in the attack were:

Sgt. 1st Class Barry E. Jarvis, 36, of Tell City, Ind.

Staff Sgt. Curtis A. Oakes, 29, of Athens, Ohio.

Spc. Matthew W. Ramsey, 20, of Quartz Hill, Calif.

Pfc. Jacob A. Gassen, 21, of Beaver Dam, Wis.

Pvt. Buddy W. McLain, 24, of Mexico, Maine.

They were assigned to the 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, KY.

I had the honor of escorting Pfc. Staggs home yesterday. As part of the Patriot Guard Riders, we escorted Pfc. Staggs and his family from his arrival at Alliance Airport in Fort Worth to the Mt. Olivet Funeral Home. His funeral will be Saturday morning. Check www.TXPGR.org for full details.

This is a video produced by the Southern Poverty Law Center on the killing of two West Memphis, Arkansas, police officers on May 20, 2010. The suspects were a father and son team who were part of the "sovereignty movement". They were both killed during a shootout with police later the same day.
